The Aces
Skully’s Music Diner 11/9
Only the upbeat and welcoming energy The Aces possess could have brought in a sold out show on the cold, snowy Sunday night of November 9th. Despite the bitter weather and it being the first snow of the winter in Columbus, Ohio, the room was packed with eager fans counting down the seconds until the show began.
Kicking off the night with “Jealous” from their newest album Gold Star Baby, was the perfect song to set the scene of the night. The funky, disco inspired track filled the room with excitement of the night to come, and Skully’s Music Diner couldn’t have been a more perfect venue for the show. Their ceiling was scattered with disco balls that reflected the vibrant, colorful lights that flooded the stage, and was right on theme for the Gold Star Baby Tour. “Girls Make Me Wanna Die,” “Good Time,” and “Twin Flame” are just a few of the songs performed throughout the set that brought the crowd to immediate cheers as they began to play. The Aces were incredible at including the fans in the performance, from giving them the microphone to share horror stories about their exes, and inviting them to sing along to a chant throughout their song, “The Magic”, which only further united the room.
The indie pop quartet is powered by members Cristal (vocals/guitar) and Alisa Ramirez (drums), Katie Henderson (lead guitar/vocals), and McKenna Petty (bass). The group originated in suburban Utah and have been making music and performing together since high school, their sound being heavily inspired by 1980s pop which is beautifully displayed on their album, Gold Star Baby, which was released earlier this year. Their long history of collaborating together as a band showed in their engaging performance and the way they danced together on stage all night.
Fans in the crowd appeared as one as they showed up in perfectly themed outfits for the Gold Star Baby Tour; gold stars carefully placed in their hair, glittering outfits reflecting off the lights as they danced, and sparkly eyeshadow covering their eyes as they watched the performance in awe.
Whether you were in the very first row, or in the very back, the energy The Aces brought made it impossible not to dance and sing along. Members of the crowd were jumping to the beat of the lively songs, strangers in the back of the venue were twirling around together, and you could feel the love that the fans shared all night long..
