Moody lighting and a few acoustic instruments were all that Young The Giant needed in order to make memorable musical moments at Firefly Distillery. The band is currently on their In The Open Tour, a scaled back version of their usual very high energy and high production live sets. This, however, did not negatively affect the impact that it had on the audience, instead it did the exact opposite.
Young the Giant opened the show with Islands, a fan favorite off of their self titled album. Their decision to run with an acoustic setting made the atmosphere intimate, like Young the Giant was having a conversation with the audience. The new arrangements in the songs that fans had been singing for 10+ years had a new way to breathe, which only strengthened and highlighted the band's talent of song writing and performance. Frontman Sameer Gadhia thrives in this environment. His vocals, free from the cushion of heavy production, carry an honesty that commands attention. Gadhia leans into the authenticity of live performance, laughing with the audience rather than retreating from the moment.
In an era where many bands center themselves around numbers and flashiness, Young the Giant has chosen instead to pull back the curtain. The In The Open tour is not just an acoustic reworking of their greatest hits. It's an opportunity for fans willing to meet them in this quieter, more vulnerable space, with an evening of music that feels timeless, human, and deeply personal. Playing a mixture of well known songs such as ‘Cough Syrup’, and ‘Mind Over Matter’ as well as some new unreleased songs such as ‘Ships Passing’ gave the audience a sense of familiarity and curiosity. Hearing these works in progress in such an intimate setting makes the audience feel like insiders, trusted with a preview of Young the Giant’s next chapter before the rest of the world.
In addition, they had announced that this was the first time they actually own their music. Saying this felt like a huge and anticipated moment that was only met with screams of congratulations from the crowd. Every fan that was in attendance is excited for what is to come in their future - especially with such a long history of success.
